Paralegal Services
What does a paralegal do?
A paralegal assists the attorney in all phases of legal work:
- Interviewing clients and witnesses
- Doing Legal Research and Other Investigative Work
- Drafting Legal Documents and Briefs
- Filing Documents and Retrieving Documents from the courthouse and other government agencies
- Preparing and Organizing Evidence For Trial
- Assisting the Attorney in the Courtroom
A paralegal cannot give legal advice or represent a client in court. A paralegal must work under direct supervision of an attorney. A paralegal cannot accept money from the public for drafting legal documents. A person, who wishes to represent himself in court, and present his own case before the judge, must draft and file his own documents. This is called being a "Pro Se Plaintiff" or a "Pro Se Defendant", depending upon which side of the lawsuit you are on. If you are not sure of how to start the process and proceed on your own, it will be better for you to hire an attorney.
